Meridians

These are pathways through which Qi flows. They form a network of interconnected channels along which specific acupuncture points are located that correspond to various organs, systems, and functions in the body.

Jing

Jing is a fundamental concept in Chinese medicine that refers to our ‘trust fund’ of energy inherited from our parents. It is stored between the kidneys, and responsible for growth, development, reproduction, and overall vitality. It is a precious substance that can only be depleted, never supplemented. We reduce over taxation of this deep constitutional energy by having adequate post-natal Qi derived from the food we eat and oxygenation.

Pao Zhi

A herbal processing technique that involves various methods of preparing herbs to enhance their therapeutic properties, eg. roasting, steaming, fermenting. It is used to modify and optimise properties of herbs for specific therapeutic action.

Yin and Yang

Stemming from Daoism, Yin Yang is all about the dualistic nature of the universe, including the human body and health. Yin represents the feminine, passive, and dark aspects, while Yang represents the masculine, active, and bright aspects. They are complementary and interdependent, and each contains a small seed of the other. Their balance is essential for health and well-being.

Qi

Qi is a fundamental concept often referred to as "vital energy" or "life force", and refers to the flow of energy within the body and its organs. It is responsible for maintaining health and vitality, and the state of Qi is influenced by various factors such as lifestyle, diet, emotions, and the environment.

Five Elements

Another fundamental concept that describes the dynamic relationship between five elements, namely Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, and their corresponding organs, seasons, emotions, colours, and characteristics. These elements are believed to be interconnected and influence each other's balance and harmony, and are used to understand the human body, nature, and the universe.
